Eric Voegelin was born in Cologne, Germany. He earned a doctorate of law and then extended his studies to political science and philosophy. He devoted his life to teaching, lecturing and writing what became the 34 volumes of his Collected Works.

Voegelin is one of the great minds of the 20th century, and in the philosophies of history and consciousness he stands alone. Because his thinking embraced philosophy, law, history, politics and theology, his thought does not fit into any one academic discipline. He fled Vienna in 1938 to escape the Nazis.
